The 2022 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru the first parcel to be picked this vintage was fully de-stemmed with 25% new oak. The complex bouquet is a mélange of red and black fruit Earl Grey light marine aromas and a touch of iodine. Complex and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with quite strict tannins on the entry. One of the most structured Volnay wines from Clerget there is a slight brusqueness towards the finish that will be addressed during the second winter in tank. Fine sapidity. (Drink between 2027-2047)
Jasper Morris: 92-94 Points
20% whole bunch for the first time this year though Thibaud has done more in 2023. The stems are kept from the older section which is about 70 years old. 3 new barrels in 10. Both the colour and the fruit on the nose are rather darker than the preceding wines. The fruit feels very complete across the palate dark raspberry with some fresher redcurrant fruit lifted by the whole bunch which I think has a useful role in freshening up the whole.
