The 2019 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru a monopole of the domaine is completely de-stemmed and matured in 30% new oak. It has one of my favourite bouquets with gorgeous shimmering red fruit laced with rose petal and light incense aromas all beautifully defined. The palate is slightly reduced but that does not disguise the intense mineral-driven red fruit that merges into darker fruit and more saline notes towards the finish. A superb Volnay that will deserve 4 or 5 years in bottle. Ten barrels produced. (Drink between 2025-2045)
The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil is showing very nicely mingling notes of sweet berry fruit and plums with hints of orange rind and spices framed by a deft touch of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied elegant and velvety with lively acids and a bright precise finish. As usual this is one of the highlights of the range.
Thibaud dug a hole to check the soil in their Monopole vineyard: some clay, then crushed limestone which lets the water through and drains well. Lots of small stones. All destemmed, 30% new wood. Rich vibrant purple, the nose shows ripe dark raspberry fruit, there are some tannins, alongside the acidity, for quite a structured, dark fruited Volnay. Complex and well worthy of keeping. Long juicy finish.
This is the first wine to display much reduction and here it's enough to mask the underlying fruit so be sure to give this some air if you're going to crack a bottle young. Otherwise there is very good volume to the fleshy but sleek and delicious flavors that exude a subtle warmth on the firm dusty moderately austere and bitter cherry pit inflected finale. This is quite compact at present and is going to need at least a few years of keeping to unwind. (Drink starting 2031)
