Paolo Scavino Description

Vineyard notes: "The Nebbiolo grapes for this Barolo were sourced from the oldest vines of the historical Fiasco vineyard located in Castiglione Falletto village, in our property since 1921 and first time vinified as single vineyard Barolo in 1978 by Enrico Scavino. Soil: marne di Sant’Agata fossili, limestone. Due probably to the central position in the Barolo region, the Fiasco cru is one of the most complex terroir, a mix of Tortonian and Helvetian soils, whitish-gray limestone and yellow-gray sandstone."

Wine Advocate: 95 Points

Paolo Scavino and more recently his daughter have always made fabulous Barolos as evidenced by my previous tasting notes on the 1988s 1989s and 1990s. However in 1993 he began utilizing small barriques (the percentage of new wood varies according to the vineyard) pushing his wines to an even higher level of quality. While the 1993s may not possess the power intensity and extract of the great 1990s qualitatively they are equals. The awesome 1993 Barolo Bric del Fiasc (one-third new oak casks) is a candidate for the Barolo of the vintage. Made from 45-year old vines this full-bodied blockbuster Barolo is amazingly rich superbly balanced and oh so profound. The fragrant penetrating bouquet of black-cherries new saddle leather tar and rose petals intermixed with subtle spicy toast is followed by an exceptionally rich medium to full-bodied wine with terrific delineation and focus as well as gorgeously integrated acidity tannin and alcohol. This dazzling young Barolo should reach full maturity in 5-6 years and last for 15+. Published: Feb 27 1997

Vinous: 91 Points

The 1993 Bric del Fiasc, tasted from an extremely rare 5-liter bottle, displays complex notes of licorice, tar, flowers and sweet fruit in a full-bodied style for the vintage. It offers notable finesse and well-integrated tannins. Still fresh, it should drink well for at least another decade. It offers noticeably better balance than the 1995 which was tasted in the same flight. - By Antonio Galloni on October 2006
