Jasper Morris: 90-92 Points
From two plots Pluchots and Grands Champs. No new wood. Intense purple. The nose is rather reduced at first but starts to clear quite quickly. The concentration of the vintage shows without any loss of Volnay elegance which starts to show in enhanced aromatics at the back of the palate. The tannins are entirely integrated and there is just the right acidity to maintain freshness. Very persistent once again.
Burghound: 89-91 Points
This is also aromatically very pretty with its slightly more deeply pitched nose that combines notes of plum dark cherry and spicy top notes. The delicious and equally vibrant medium weight flavors possess a refined but decidedly punchy mouthfeel all wrapped in a chalky firm and balanced finale. This is excellent and a wine that should amply repay mid-term keeping. (Drink starting 2029)

Aromas of sweet cherries dark berries and grilled squab introduce the 2022 Volnay Village a medium-bodied velvety and fleshy wine with lively acids and a sapid finish. It's another strong performance for this reliable bottling. Guillaume d'Angerville and technical director François Duvivier once again opted to pick early in 2022 beginning harvest on August 23 to produce a crop of pure fine-boned perfumed reds that will delight Burgundy purists. As I've written before followers of d'Angerville will be familiar with the protocol here: biodynamic farming destemmed grapes classical macerations and élevage in barrels?of which some 20% are new with older barrels generally being retained for five vintages. These have always been seriously long-lived wines but contemporary d'Angerville isn't quite as backward and slow to evolve as the wines were in the days of Guillaume d'Angerville's father. The use of barrels with a somewhat younger average age?even if percentages of new wood remain very modest?gives them a slightly glossier patina especially in their youth. Published: Jan 18 2024
