Medium to deep ruby-purple in color the 2022 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard comes barreling out with bold notes of fresh blackberries and black cherries opening out to suggestions of anise garrigue and lilacs. The medium-bodied palate reveals impactful black berry flavors with wonderfully spicy accents supported by grainy tannins and great tension finishing long with a minerally lift. This is an all Calera vineyard. Andy Smith winegrower and proprietor at DuMOL commented on how shy their 2022 Chardonnays were in barrel. ?I don?t remember a vintage where the wines developed in barrel quite as much? he said. ?The quality kind of snuck up on us during the elevage. As we came through malo-lactic the wines really developed. And so we aged the wines a little longer in the barrel. These were bottled in February as opposed to November or December.? The big news this year at DuMOL is Jenna Davis?s promotion to winemaker. Jenna started at DuMOL in 2014 as a harvest intern and has been working closely under Andy?s mentorship since. While tasting through the 2022s with Jenna and Andy Jenna commented ?The spring of 2022 was quite a difficult frost season. The early budbreak made it very nerve-wracking. We lost a little bit to frost. Then it was a relatively dry growing season. We started harvesting on August 12th. For the Chardonnays we were around 80% in b
The 2022 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard comes from high-density Swan and Calera-clone vines planted in 2004. Grapes were harvested on August 15-16 well before the Labor Day heat wave. This has expressive wild aromas of black and red berries blood orange earth violet and botanicals. The light-bodied palate features concentrated spicy fruit. Its mouthwatering acidity and powdery tannins give it a sense of weightlessness and it has a long detailed finish. 810 cases were made. Published: Jul 11 2024
From the estate?s top vineyard planted with 100% Calera clone in more clay soil the 2022 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard boasts a ripe ruby color and classic aromas of pure cherries candied roses sweet Asian spices and sweet sap. Medium-bodied it?s elegant and refined on the palate with a silky texture an approachable feel and a fresh clean soft stony finish. Drink 2024-2036.
The 2022 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard is laced with black cherry plum leather cloves rose petals and lavender which are nicely amplified in this succulent mid-weight Pinot Noir. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner sweetness and perfume. Soft contours wrap it all together in style. Pretty floral and mineral notes linger. The DuMOL Estate Pinot is typically a blend of Calera and Swan clones. In 2022 the team opted to use only the Calera section. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2024 This is a gorgeous set of wines from DuMOL in a very challenging year. Frost in May variable weather during bloom and severe drought resulted in vines with loose clusters and low yields. Chardonnay yields were down 30% while for Pinot Noir losses were more modest at 15%. "Drought pushed vines to build sugars quickly" Owner and Winemaker Andy Smith explained. "We had very cool weather in August. At that point sugars stopped moving while acidities began to drop. That's when we started to bring fruit in." Harvest began on August 12 a full month earlier than 2023. Most of the fruit was in before the worst of the heat spike that was so problematic in other regions. In tasting the 2022s come across as a bit light in body. The wines don't have the dimension or dynamic intensity of years such as 2021. That is to be expected. In exchange though the wines will drink well with minimal cellaring. More than anything I see the 2022s as wines of balance of equilibrium. The Pinots were done with fully destemmed fruit except for the Bressay which saw partial stem inclusion. Smith and the winemaking team gave the Pinots 17 months in barrel with no racking about two months longer than usual. The Chardonnays underwent their typical élevage of 11 months in barrel and 6-7 months in tank. Interestingly I found the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from the Bressay and DuMOL Estate vineyards to be especially fine. Both are high-density vineyards. ?In these vineyards we are asking the plants to carry lower individual crops so the vines are less affected by a lack of water? Smith added. There are a lot of theories about optimal vineyard architecture in these climate change-challenged times. It?s a fascinating subject that warrants greater discussion.
Rather flamboyant with ripe strawberry and iron notes and iodine undertones. Full and flavorful yet with framed and polished gorgeous fruit and hints of strawberry tart and pie crust at the end. What you would expect of a top Russian River pinot. Calera clone with a touch of Swan. Drink or hold.
