A juicy well-built red with a structured core of dark cherry and boysenberry fruit harnessed by streaks of wet stone savory and tobacco while bay and sandalwood hints peek in on the finish. This is still tight coiled and steely but the energy is there for unfurling in the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2038. ?J.M.
The 2022 Pinot Noir Bloom's Field is bright punchy and alluring. Red-toned fruit chalk mint spice and dried flowers infuse this savory mineral-driven Pinot with tons of character. The 2022 is nervy and taut to its core but another year in bottle should do the trick. Hints of white pepper blood orange and pomegranate linger on the vibrant translucent finish. - By Antonio Galloni on July 2024 Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr turned out a stellar set of Pinots at Domaine de la Côte. I tasted the 2022s twice once at the winery and then again a few weeks later in New York. The wines showed better in my home office which is not unusual.

Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr turned out a stellar set of Pinots at Domaine de la Côte. I tasted the 2022s twice, once at the winery and then again a few weeks later in New York. The wines showed better in my home office, which is not unusual. Sometimes, removing wines from their context serves to highlight quality, as the only thing left is the wines themselves. As always, the house style favors a very high percentage of whole clusters. In 2022, the dry, warm year balanced stem inclusion and the natural savoriness of this very cool site on the far western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. “We tend to ripen on the early side, probably because our yields are so low,” Moorman elaborated. “We brought everything in before the severe heat, but where the heat was more evident was in the cellar. We use only ambient ferments, so fermentations were warmer than usual. As a result, the 2022s have a bit more extraction than our norm.” Beginning in 2022, the Pinots see more new oak than in the past. The goal of this decision is two-fold: firstly, to add structure in compensation for the recent exclusion of press lots, and secondly, to ensure a hygienic environment for the wines, as the domaine does not use SO2 in pre-fermentation or aging.
vmThe 2022 Pinot Noir Bloom's Field is the most red-fruited and floral of the roster opening on a reserved note but ceaselessly escalating in intensity. The palate takes a dramatically powerful saturated turn into a slow-moving opulent yet classy finish that ceaselessly builds tannic power without adding an ounce of weight. Serious and unyielding despite its deceptively delicate framing this merits time in the cellar to unwind but should evolve wonderfully over the next decade. Unquestionably one of the premier Pinot Noir-focused wineries in the United States this partnership between Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr has made significant strides to push quality and transparency even further. Shorter élevages of 10?11 months in higher proportions of new Ermitage barrels have added freshness and polish melding exceptionally well with their all-in stance on whole-cluster fermentations. The only sulfur additions occur at bottling and the 2023 vintage saw the complete elimination of press wine. Their 40 acres of tightly spaced heritage clone Pinot Noir plantings yield a punishing average of two tons per acre?at densities of 4000?7000 vines per acre?instilling the wines with a captivating concentration while remaining strikingly ethereal. Domaine de la Côte has always produced well-crafted and alluring wines but the last few vintages have elevated the wines to another degree of confidence and completeness. Published: Oct 10 2024
