Ripe black cherries leafy underbrush iron black raspberries and floral nuances all shine in the 2022 Pinot Noir Suerte Solomon Hills Vineyard a rivetingly pure medium-bodied 2022 that has fine integrated tannins a layered multi-dimensional mouthfeel and a great finish. It's layered nuanced and complex with an incredible sense of purity and class. Drink bottles any time over the coming 8-10 years.

The deepest and darkest of Paul Lato's Pinot Noir offerings the 2022 Pinot Noir Suerte Solomon Hills Vineyard opens with intense perfumed aromas of blueberries black plums black tea and rose petals. On the palate it perfectly marries the restrained opulence and subtle concentration of the house style with the site's classically lifted ethereal texture. The finish is long layered and saline capturing both vertical focus and horizontal richness in great detail. As impressive as this is at this early stage it was still quite buttoned up and will surely unwind after a year or so. If you're fortunate enough to have a tasting with the gregarious and eminently entertaining Paul Lato be sure to leave yourself plenty of time before your next appointment as your conversations will likely be numerous and wide-ranging. Lato's evolution is as inspiring as it is impressive from humble beginnings to subsequent progression from sommelier to winemaker. Given the lavish textures on display throughout his work one could be forgiven for describing his roster as quite stylistic but that would be a disservice; Lato accomplishes the rare feat of transparently expressing vineyards yet doing so with an indelible fingerprint a touch that is in this case confidently luxurious and manages to enhance the wines rather than muddle them. Production now occurs at the former Byron facility where obsessive sorting destemming basket pressing and extended time in the finest barrels he can buy contribute to producing the multifaceted sumptuous and classy offerings on display.
