Decanter: 93 Points

A delicious result with a ripe nuanced blackberry and bramble fruit character. The texture of the wine has an exuberant youthful freshness and vivacity. Not for long ageing but very enjoyable on the fruit alone. Lafon owns more than a hectare in the east-facing Monthélie premier cru of Les Duresses. It is not among his most high-profile bottlings but perhaps he feels free to experiment a bit because of this. Unlike most reds a good proportion of the grapes are fermented as whole clusters and the wine sees no sulphur before bottling. (Drink between 2023 - 2040)

Wine Advocate: 89-91 Points

Offering up aromas of dark cherries, berries, spices and loamy soil, the 2020 Monthélie Les Duresses is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with terrific depth and energy. It's one of the finest renditions of this cuvée that I can remember tasting chez Lafon.

Jasper Morris: 89-91 Points

The last vineyard to be picked as is usually the case. A good yield here. Fresh full purple a pure pinot nose thick textured deep raspberry fruit on the palate some tannins low acidity plenty of fruit weight and lovely persistence.

The 2020 Monthélie “les Duresses” Rouge from the Lafon family is the only red wine here that shows a bit of extra concentration and ripeness from the vintage’s characteristics, as the bouquet offers up a quite exuberant blend of black raspberries, a touch of fruitcake, dark soil tones, woodsmoke, a touch of new oak and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and tangy, with a good core of fruit, moderate tannins and a long, tangy and complex finish. This is not as powerful as some red wines in 2020, but it does show a touch of the concentrating effect from desiccated berries that were so prevalent in this vintage, and which none of the Volnays chez Lafon share. It is still a good, solid wine. (Drink between 2027 - 2050)

Burghound

A fresh, ripe and subtly complex nose combines notes of just crushed red currant and plum that is laced with discreet earth wisps. The rich, delicious and attractively vibrant middle weight flavors conclude in a mildly austere and ever-so-mildly warm finale. (Drink starting 2026).
