The 2020 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru is more earthier on the nose than the Village Cru and demonstrates more red fruit touches of tobacco and Early Grey emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red berry fruit quite saline with a dash of white pepper towards the finish. If you don?t manage to grab the Clos des Epeneaux this year try to get your mitts in this. (Drink between 2025-2045)
Burghound: 90-93 Points
A notably ripe yet still appealing fresh nose includes notes of both red and dark raspberry anise and just turned earth. The slightly bigger-bodied flavors possess a finer mouthfeel while delivering notably better depth on the stony and sneaky long finish where a touch of austerity slowly emerges. Good development potential here. (Drink starting 2028)
