Here the tannins are extremely angular and unyielding. This is classic Montrose that is a little firm and nanny-ish at this point although as it opens in the glass you see a generosity to the fruit coming to the fore with sweet blueberry and raspberry notes. Well handled but lacks the generosity of 2010 and 2009. Petit Verdot 3% completes the blend. Harvest September 2 to 27.
dFeatures some lovely plum black currant and blackberry fruit already melded into the core while a pure long and rather regal structure runs through the finish letting extra charcoal and pebble notes play out. Offers precision range and a beautiful mix of fruit and austerity. Best from 2017 through 2027. 13750 cases made.
Tasted at the château the 2011 Montrose is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon 22% Merlot 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot picked between 2-27 September. The nose does not possess the exuberance of the 2008 a little conservative and lacking personality by comparison. It does repay aeration though and after some time there are attractive cold stone/limestone notes that begin to emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grippy tannin. It is a solid Montrose quite stout perhaps not the greatest fun you will ever have with a Claret yet with admirable depth on the lightly spiced cedar-infused finish. Whilst I prefer the 2008 Montrose the 2011 is a decent off-vintage that should offer 20 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted September 2016.
Deep ruby-purple. Mineral notes complicate scents of fresh blackcurrant and cedar. Dense and pure on entry, then almost austere in the middle, showing very refined flavors of crystallized blackcurrant and juicy blackberry. Finishes with rising, noble tannins and a minty edge. Only 44% of total production (rather than normal 65%) went into the grand vin because the cabernets didn't produce as much. Note that since 2007 more of the estate's cabernet franc and petit verdot are going into the flagship wine; in fact, Glumineau plans to remove some merlot and add more cabernet franc.
Powerful yet still fruity, this is a true wine of 2011. It shows dark tannins and juicy fruit in equal measure. The wine has weight, complexity and power. A real success.
