The estate was founded by Giovanni Neri, a grain merchant from south of Florence, who purchased the 200 hectare Casanova farm on the eastern side of Montalcino in 1971. The first Brunello bottling was made that year but the first commercial release was produced in 1982. Giovanni’s son Giacomo took over in 1991 and he has now been joined by his own son Giovanni since 2012.
A Tenuta Nuova bottling was first produced from a newly acquired site south of town in 1993. A wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon was also made at this time and further acquisitions were made on the northern slopes. By 2015 the winery was sourcing grapes from six different vineyard locations.
The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino sweeps across the palate with superb richness and depth. Dark cherries plums spices tobacco and menthol blossom as the wine opens up in the glass. A decidedly large-scaled dramatic wine for the year the 2008 impresses for its pure resonance and rich enveloping finish. This is one of the most rewarding 2008s to drink upon release but it should also age well for a number of years.
