Cantalupo?s 2016 Ghemme Collis Carellae is such an example of what makes Alto Piemonte so special. Now closing in on its eighth birthday the 2016 remains fresh and vibrant. Its mid-weight structure and understated intensity are classic signatures of the appellation. The 2016 is a wine to open and savor over several hours. Sweet macerated cherry spice leather tobacco incense and dried herbs all lift from the glass. There?s perhaps a bit of rusticity in the aromatics and the feel of the tannin but those qualities won?t be especially evident at the dinner table. This is a classic as classic gets. - By Antonio Galloni on May 2024
