The captivating Baricci 2019 Brunello is another gorgeous wine from this storied producer. It offers enticing scents of woodland berry new leather camphor pipe tobacco and dog rose
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is youthfully inward and darkly floral with an herbal tinge and hints of crushed ashen stone that give way to vivid black raspberry and exotic spice. This is juicy and spry with racy cherry-berry fruit and stimulating acidity that creates a sensation of boundless energy even as a saturation of primary concentration settles in toward the close. The 2019 finishes with incredible length and youthful tension leaving balsamic spice sage and licorice notes lingering over a bed of dusty tannins. - By Eric Guido on November 2023 Winemaker Federico Buffi took me through a large portion of their vineyards all located east and southeast of the Montosoli Hill. In recent years the family has begun slowly replanting some of their oldest vines to maintain health in the vineyards and ensure a bright future for the winery. All of the family?s portfolio is made from Montosoli with parcels that are contiguous and planted high in calcium carbonate soils. A large collection of marine fossils regularly found throughout the vineyard is located in the winery. The combination of Baricci?s northern location soils ventilating winds and traditional winemaking yields wines that are a model of purity and refinement with a stern mineral core and lifting acidity. From the Rosso to the Riserva this is one of the absolute top portfolios in all of Montalcino.
Baricci's wines are some of the most distinctive and elegant in the appellation. Showing medium-rich concentration the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli delivers granite slate black cherry and dark currant in one very impactful dollop. The fruit condition is excellent with a little under-ripeness that bodes well for the wine's longevity. Montosoli has a bigger presence in the mouth compared to most thanks to the pronounced mineral nuances but the wine remains elegant throughout and especially on the mid-palate. Fruit for this wine comes from the estate's oldest vines aged 25 to 40 years old in soils rich in marl quartz schist and marine fossils. Production is 16560 bottles. Baricci presents two very interesting wines this year. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is a wine that owns its pedigree with confidence whereas the newly introduced 2021 Rosso di Montalcino still needs to find its footing?especially considering the room for growth in this entry-level appellation. Baricci's vines are officially part of the Brunello denomination (in the celebrated Montosoli cru) and although this might seem like a purely bureaucratic consideration it actually gives this winery enormous flexibility in terms of its future offerings. As the five hectares of its youngest vines grow older Baricci can reasonably add to its excellent Brunello program or hone in on the unique opportunities of price-conscious Rosso di Montalcino.
