Badiòla is a historic vineyard farmed by the Mazzei family but this is the first Gran Selezione expression made with its fruit. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Badiòla offers terrific intensity and purity that shows power but it also holds back to affirm a sense of elegance. In the true sense of the word "balance" the wine falls squarely in between those two descriptors. Wild berry fruit button mushroom blue flower cola and underbrush are tightly woven together on the bouquet. Despite the heat and natural fruit concentration associated with this vintage this wine delivers a special and enduring sense of weightlessness. A mere 3000 bottles were made.
A sleek strapping red whose incisive acidity defines its cherry strawberry and earth flavors. Tightens up on the finish ending crisply. There is a core of red fruit that will need time to find an equilibrium with the bracing structure. Fine length. Best from 2024 through 2040. 250 cases made 30 cases imported. ? BS
A new wine in this range the 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola is a bit more linear than other Gran Seleziones but that is the personality of Radda speaking. Bright red fruit chalk mint and blood orange all open up in this taut nervy Gran Selezione from Mazzei. (Drink between 2023-2037)
