The 2022 Volnay En Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru a vineyard suffering from degeneration was fully de-stemmed. Red berry fruit violets and iris flower on the nose - this blossoms in the glass a hint of vanilla in the background. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grain tannins and gentle grip. This is very elegant and pure cohesive and silky on the finish. This is a gorgeous Volnay that will age with style. (Drink between 2026-2042)
Burghound: 91-93 Points
Here the expressive nose is slightly riper and spicier with a similar mix of red and dark berries and exotic tea. The sleek caressing and nicely punchy middleweight flavors possess fine mid-palate volume as well as even more evident minerality on the mildly austere and dusty finish. This is pretty much textbook Carelle which is to say a wine of lace and grace. (Drink starting 2030)
Jasper Morris: 91-93 Points
Very low yield thanks to 161/49 rootstock issues. Just six barrels of which two are new. Mid crimson a slightly more restrained nose partly the wood. This is quite tight undemonstrative but with a fine red fruit intensity through the middle needing more elevage.
