Tasted from barrel the 2021 Screaming Eagle dazzles from start to finish. Dark savory and explosive the 2021 deftly marries power and finesse like few vintages I can remember tasting. Dark cherry plum mocha grilled herbs leather and a kick of spice all build in this wonderfully vibrant layered Screaming Eagle. There's plenty of tannin but it is elegantly built into the wine's fabric. - By Antonio Galloni on December 2023 These are two fabulous 2021s from Screaming Eagle and winemaker Nick Gislason. In some years Gislason is among the early pickers but in 2021 he waited. Merlot was harvested in late September while the Cabernets were picked in the middle of October. The wines were still in barrel when I stopped by but that moment at the end of aging and just before bottling is often a very good time to taste certainly better than just after bottling. Yields are down about 25% so there will be less wine to go around.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon with 18% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc in the blend is deep garnet-purple in color. A tad shy to start it soon unfurls to offer notes of freshly crushed black and red currants wild blueberries and iris followed by nuances of anise forest floor mint tea and pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a very firm frame of exquisitely ripe fine-grained tannins and wonderful tension supporting the tightly knit black fruit and floral layers finishing long and minerally. As with the Flight I was able to taste through multiple barrels destined for the 2021 Screaming Eagle. Pure cassis and assorted dark fruits some classic graphite and lead pencil notes as well as a beautiful sense of minerality were present in all of the barrels and this will be a medium to full-bodied elegant expression of Screaming Eagle.
