The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is positively stellar. Dark fruit savory herbs leather licorice and menthol race out of the glass. Powerful and vertical with serious intensity the 2021 is a super-classic Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon. All the elements are so well balanced. Graphite incense and a whole range of mineral/savory tones linger on the brooding finish. Specifically the tannins are incredibly refined?quite an achievement for this site. A dollop of Merlot likely contributes to that. - By Antonio Galloni on December 2023 Realm is without question the most ambitious winery in Napa Valley today. Realizing the perils of depending solely on purchased fruit principals Scott Becker and Benoit Touquette have put together an enviable collection of estate vineyards starting with Hartwell in Stags Leap then Farella in Coombsville and most recently Houyi ensuring that Realm will always have a dependable supply of estate fruit. It?s a bold move that has been matched by very few other players in Napa Valley and only one on a large scale that I can think of. I tasted the 2021s at Houyi a spectacular site on Pritchard Hill that also affords striking views of the area. The wines are seriously impressive and also show a gradual move towards a style that favors a bit more vibrancy than in the past. "It was a year with very small berries and high tannins" Touquette explained. "We had to be careful to not extract too much."

The 2021 Farella Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Merlot in the blend is deep garnet-purple in color. It rolls out with playful notes of blueberry compote chocolate mint and blackcurrant jelly followed by hints of iris bulb allspice and vanilla pod. The full-bodied palate offers chunky rounded tannins and just enough freshness to support the spicy black fruits finishing long and perfumed. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard checks in as 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot that's from 30-year-old vines in the Coombsville appellation in the southern part of Napa Valley. It has a classic old school Napa vibe in its herbal black fruits camphor bouquet garni and violet-tinged aromas and flavors. Rich full-bodied and concentrated it has terrific purity and freshness ripe tannins and the class to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and evolve for at least two decades.
