The 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières derives from a parcel situated next to Grivault's Clos des Perrières. Unwinding in the glass with scents of musky peach white flowers fresh pear and nutmeg it's medium to full-bodied layered and concentrated with fine tension at the core racy acids and a long mineral finish. This was my first visit to Domaine Ballot-Millot where Charles Ballot is producing serious wines old-fashioned in the best sense that deserve to be better known. Ballot told me that he generally presses whole bunches without crushing his press cycle lasting three-and-a-half hours with some 15 rotations. Débourbage is brief to non-existent and the wines go to barrel without addition of yeasts enzymes or anything else. After 12 months in wood (from Tonnelleries Damy and Billon) they are fined in the event of any protein instability and remain in tank to digest any dissolved oxygen before bottling in January or February. The result is textural structured wines with lovely cut and concentration that often display a gently reductive personality. Everything I tasted comes recommended.

The 2017 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru is clearly the pick from winemaker Charles Ballot this year. It has a wonderful mineral-rich tensile bouquet that displays much more energy and conviction than the Genevrières. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry offering orange peel and dried apricot notes and very long and expansive toward the finish. Superb.

A trace of mineral reduction sits atop the pretty and very floral-inflected aromas of various white-fleshed fruit and citrus scents. The caressing yet intense mineral-driven flavors possess outstanding complexity on the balanced and impressively long finish. This is at once delicate yet powerful and should also age effortlessly.
