The naturally exotic nose reflects notes of spiced tea orange peel and lychee nut. The super-sleek and silky middle weight flavors exhibit plenty of minerality on the focused intense and linear finish. I very much like the sophisticated mouth feel as well as the refreshing salinity and this beauty should age effortlessly. (91-94)/2025+
Notes of pear white flowers green apple nutmeg and spices preface the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières a medium to full-bodied satiny and racy wine that's neither as ample and fleshy as the Bouchères nor as structured and tensile as the Charmes. This was my first visit to Domaine Ballot-Millot where Charles Ballot is producing serious wines old-fashioned in the best sense that deserve to be better known. Ballot told me that he generally presses whole bunches without crushing his press cycle lasting three-and-a-half hours with some 15 rotations. Débourbage is brief to non-existent and the wines go to barrel without addition of yeasts enzymes or anything else. After 12 months in wood (from Tonnelleries Damy and Billon) they are fined in the event of any protein instability and remain in tank to digest any dissolved oxygen before bottling in January or February. The result is textural structured wines with lovely cut and concentration that often display a gently reductive personality. Everything I tasted comes recommended.
The 2017 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru is a step up from the village cru as you would expect. Hazelnut smoke and light orange blossom scents gradually unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and well-judged acidity. This is not a powerful Meursault nor particularly complex yet it is disarmingly pretty and shows impressive persistence. Perhaps there is more to come later.
