The 2021 Pinot Noir Pomarium is packed with notes of black cherry liqueur and kirsch pure ripe fruit a touch of sage and sweet earth. It?s more grounded and muscular with ripe broad tannins and has great depth as well as a grounded nature with good fruit throughout. Drink over 2016-2046. Peay was founded by brothers Andy and Nick Peay in the remote coastal region of Annapolis where they found a unique break in the coastal range that cools and moderates the temperatures. They initially planted the first 30 acres in 1998 followed by another 17 acres in 2001 and six acres in 2007. 2001 was their first vintage producing varietal wines dedicated to Chardonnay Pinot Noir Syrah and Viognier from volcanic and nutrient-poor marine soils of silty loam with low clay content. Winemaker Vanessa Wong had previously been at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Bordeaux Domaine Jean Gros in Burgundy and with Peter Michael prior to joining Peay in 2000. The estate has been certified organic for the past eight years. Peay was one of the original five wineries who joined forces to create what is now the West Sonoma Coast Vintners Association. At Peay the whites all undergo native fermentations and are unfined and unfiltered. The reds do not follow a recipe regarding oak and stem inclusion but the philosophy is to highlight the purity and intrinsic character of the wines and not obscure it. Named after the natural features of the property they are highly expressive and singular wines that reflect their cool climate and mountainous terrain origins with distinctive notes of sous bois and age-worthy structure.
The 2021 Estate Pinot Noir Pomarium is notable this vintage for its balance of concentrated fruit and vibrant freshness. Its broody scents of cranberry sauce mushroom and conifer give way to licorice and Angostura bitters as it spends time in the glass. Its concentrated flavors defy its youthfully reluctant aromas offering wave after wave of perfumed fruit. It has a fine chalky frame and focused acidity that drives its long layered finish. It drinks beautifully straight from the bottle but it may have more to offer in another 3-5 years. Published: Jun 15 2023
Pomarium is Latin for apple orchard. The Peay estate is a former 140-year-old apple orchard on the far West Sonoma Coast; nowadays, it is planted to Calera, Mt Eden, Swann and 667 clones, mainly the last two. The floral notes are pungent with hints of earth, frankincense and smoked cedar. This wine is 10% whole cluster; there's a red plum character with early-season tart blackberries, though there is a real woodsy character, dried pine needles, and early-season blackberry. Delicious. (Drink between 2024-2039)
