The 2022 Chardonnay Le Souvenir Sierra Madre Vineyard has a pure crystalline nose of ripe stone fruits white flowers chalky minerality and hints of minty herbs. This carries to a medium-bodied Chardonnay that has a layered mouthfeel bright yet perfectly integrated acidity and a great finish. It has just a kiss of background oak and as with the other wines from Lato it opens up beautifully with air. Drink bottles any time over the coming 7-8 years. I wouldn't be surprised to see it keep longer.

The 2022 Chardonnay Le Souvenir Sierra Madre Vineyard is broad and robust yet poised and focused throughout. It opens with an exotic flashy slightly reductive nose framed with a gentle leesy richness. On the palate it is rich velvety and seamless in texture before concluding with a finish that is equal parts decadent deft and elegant. While quite open and generous now this has enough of a structural rudder to develop beautifully in the cellar over the next 10 years. If you're fortunate enough to have a tasting with the gregarious and eminently entertaining Paul Lato be sure to leave yourself plenty of time before your next appointment as your conversations will likely be numerous and wide-ranging. Lato's evolution is as inspiring as it is impressive from humble beginnings to subsequent progression from sommelier to winemaker. Given the lavish textures on display throughout his work one could be forgiven for describing his roster as quite stylistic but that would be a disservice; Lato accomplishes the rare feat of transparently expressing vineyards yet doing so with an indelible fingerprint a touch that is in this case confidently luxurious and manages to enhance the wines rather than muddle them. Production now occurs at the former Byron facility where obsessive sorting destemming basket pressing and extended time in the finest barrels he can buy contribute to producing the multifaceted sumptuous and classy offerings on display.
