Here the nose ramps up the floral influence even further though there is also ample earth influence to the ripe aromas of plum dark currant and just slice fennel. Once again the mouthfeel is gorgeous with its lilting texture and subtle minerality that seems to become more prominent on the balanced and lingering finish. A ballerina of a wine though this is not 'code' for light as there is very good aging potential. (Drink starting 2030)

Pretty and perfumed the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles wafts from the glass with notes of sweet red berries plums rose petals raw cocoa and loamy soil. Medium-bodied bright and fine-boned it's lively and precise with filigree tannins and an aromatic finish. "We chose balance over so-called phenolic maturity" Guillaume d'Angerville declared as we began our tasting of his 2020s; and the vintage that on paper was the most extreme of the 2020-2019-2018 trio has in fact delivered the most fine-boned pretty wines of them all. Perfumed vibrant and beautifully balanced this is a compellingly delicate precise portfolio that comes warmly recommended. Published: Jan 20 2022
