Notions of plums dark berries smoke spices and loamy soil preface the 2021 Côte de Nuits-Villages Aux Montagnes a medium to full-bodied ample and vibrant wine with a bright spine of acidity and a long mineral finish. Camille Thiriet's small négociant operation launched with the 2016 vintage and it only goes from strength to strength as Camille hones her stylistic sensibilities and gains in experience (and incidentally the cumulative experience of Camille's friends who help out during the harvest including the likes of ex-Domaine de la Romanée-Conti winemaker Bernard Noblet and Domaine Dujac's Jérémy Seysses is far from inconsequential). The big news here is that Camille has acquired six hectares of vineyards including three prime Côte de Nuits-Villages climats and some generic Bourgogne. That goes to show that despite all the challenges that newcomers in Burgundy face the barriers to entry are not insurmountable and I am expecting great things. In the winery fermentation with appreciable percentages of whole bunches basket pressing and judiciously chosen barrels for élevage are the rudiments of the approach; the result is wines of charm and real character. 2021 was an especially challenging growing season yet Camille has come out on top producing wines that show the true extent of her talents. Everything reviewed here comes warmly recommended.
Four barrels made from this domaine vineyard. Camille started by destemming then saw how good the grapes were and changed her mind finishing with 40% whole bunches. A lovely mid purple. This is more complete and more classic with a heart of dark fruit over and above the others with a clean thread of acidity. Fills the mouth nicely not quite so persistent as Retraits though nearly. Drink from 2024-2028.
