More crimson than purple. An intriguing bouquet with some elegance very detailed as there seems to be more of a mineral thread here. This has gone back to barrel for extra ageing. It is a fine and complex wine with excellent structure.
Layered aromas include those of purple fruit spiced tea and a plethora of floral elements. The super-sleek and beautifully detailed middleweight plus flavors possess a beguiling texture yet the impressively long finish does not lack for power or depth. It is always a bit of vintage-by-vintage battle between this and the Faconnières but at this very early stage it appears that the Chenevery has the early lead. We will of course see in 12 to 15 years as both wines should develop and cellar gracefully. (Drink starting 2034)
The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chenevery 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet perhaps the most floral from the Domaine this year with wilted rose petals and a touch of violet filtering through the mainly red fruit. Fine delineation and focus. The palate is well-balanced with fine tannins the 50% whole bunches judiciously used and fine grip finishing with a touch of curry leaf and white pepper. It fans out gently as it aerates in the glass. Great potential. (Drink between 2026-2048)
The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Chenevery is built for the cellar unwinding in the glass with notes of red berries plums rose petals and spices followed by a medium to full-bodied lively and mineral palate that's concentrated and tightly wound. It's downslope from Faconnières but the soils are shallow swiftly giving way to the mother rock. This was my first visit to this 12-hectare domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis where the estate's holdings are complemented by some carefully chosen négociant exchanges and acquisitions. Virgile Lignier is an adept of whole bunches and looks for gentle extraction during vinification followed by maturation in increasingly discreet cooperage. I left impressed by a winery that's clearly made appreciable progress over the last few years delivering a range of sauve fleshy 2022s with good depth and balance. Published: Jan 18 2024
