13 barrels this year half domaine fruit and half contracted from a very good source. Super bright rich purple. Clearly greater intensity here. A lively vibrant red fruit raspberry blueberry a few more tannins raw compared to Clos St-Denis but with greater long term potential. Excellent finish.
The 2022 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru which contains around 60% whole bunches has a more cohesive bouquet compared to the Clos Saint-Denis: pure red berry fruit wet limestone sous-bois and a tangible sense of primal energy. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins. Very harmonious with perfectly judged acidity this fans out wonderfully towards the pixelated finish. Excellent. (Drink between 2025-2050)
Ripe fresh and beautifully layered aromas are composed by notes of poached plum and a variety of spice elements that combine with intensely floral earth and sauvage-inflected nuances all of which is trimmed in enough wood and menthol wisps to notice. I very much like the texture of the delicious medium-bodied flavors that even if not especially dense still possess good power and minerality while delivering excellent depth and length on the balanced bitter pit fruit finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. Excellent. (Drink starting 2034)
Lignier produced 15 barrels of the 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru derived from holdings in Genavrières and Monts Luisants. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries orange zest burning embers exotic spices and loamy soil it's full-bodied layered and multidimensional with a deep core of fruit supple tannins and a long sapid finish. This is a terrific effort. This was my first visit to this 12-hectare domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis where the estate's holdings are complemented by some carefully chosen négociant exchanges and acquisitions. Virgile Lignier is an adept of whole bunches and looks for gentle extraction during vinification followed by maturation in increasingly discreet cooperage. I left impressed by a winery that's clearly made appreciable progress over the last few years delivering a range of sauve fleshy 2022s with good depth and balance. Published: Jan 18 2024
