A very charismatic fresh nose promise of natural intensity and elegance with strong presence of fruits fruits of all types. A diverse bouquet of orange aromas with some notes of liquorice and light chocolate biscuit can be enjoyed.
On the palate astonishing balanced and delicate with significant fresh tropical wild and crystalised fruits. It is a hymn to fruit: red white and citrus fruit with notes of cassis chocolate candied-orange peel cocoa beans honey with hints of smoke and toast enhanced by a vibrant persistent long finish. "
It is hard to believe that two and a half years have now passed since Champagne Krug unveiled its long-awaited 2002 Vintage Brut. I do not know if there have been different disgorgements of this bottling but this one is the same as the last bottle that swept me off of my feet back in the spring of last year having been disgorged in the autumn of 2015. The wine is a blend of forty percent pinot noir thirty-nine percent chardonnay and twenty-one percent pinot meunier in 2002 and is already one of the legendary vintages of Krug ever produced. The bouquet is deep pure ripe and vibrant wafting from the glass in a marvelous blend of pear apple almond a stunningly beautiful base of soil tones subtle spice shading patissière a touch of citrus blossoms and that signature Krug smokiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine rock solid mineral-driven and shows off stellar purity with its full-bodied format seamlessly supported by great structure and grip. The mousse is impeccable the complexity still youthful and growing with each visit and the finish long refined and absolutely perfect. This will last almost forever and I suspect at age fifty-seven I will never drink it at its absolute zenith of evolutionary perfection. But I admit very much enjoying my occasional visits as the wine is in climbing mode to that future peak! (Drink between 2022-2095)75)
d"The much-anticipated 2002 has impeccable detail and depth with a lot of chalky stony and flinty elements on the nose as well as a very fresh edge. The nose is very complex and wound up tight but presents itself as very integrated and compressed. There are aromas of lemon rind lime juice and lime custard all at once complemented in turn by a super-restrained hazelnut-like edge. Undertones of brown mushrooms chalky minerals and lemon leaf. The palate has a core of sizzlingly intense concentrated chardonnay framed within a powerful phenolic structure that will underpin the future of this Champagne. There's also plenty of acidity for the future and this will no doubt continue to evolve and blossom; it will be merely an act of refining its already impressive focus linearity and magical finish. This is really a great great vintage for Krug. Flawlessly fresh and as perfect as it gets. Give this time as it needs to settle: best from 2020 and then for another decade beyond."
This is a fabulous wine from the greatest Champagne vintage so far this century. Still young, it blends almost equal amounts of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fleshed out with Pinot Meunier. The minerality and the rich apple and green fruits are balanced, and acidity cuts into the wine with a pure, perfumed line of freshness. The wine could be drunk now, but it will age well into the the 2020s.
Medium golden-yellow, silver shimmers, very delicate mousse. Scents of orange marmalade, white blossoms, a delicate nutty undertone o
The 2002 Krug is a riveting, incisive wine with a compelling complexity and length that set it apart. The richness is less prominent on the initial attack, but the aromas open with time to show the iconic Krug character that spans passionfruit, citrus, coconut, and smoke aromas with a surging mineral undercurrent. The wine is vibrantly dynamic on the palate, with enough extract to ensure a lengthy finish. The blend includes 40% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay, and 21% Meunier, whose approachable floral notes suffuse the bouquet. The wine was disgorged in 2015 with an extra-brut dosage and will easily live another thirty years. (Drink between 2022-2055)
Krug's 2002 Brut (ID 415064 ? disgorged IV/2015) has an intense citrus color and opens with a generous intense yet fine and precise bouquet that indicates great depth and elegance. Red fruit flavors on the nose lead to a generously rich yet pure highly refined and elegant palate with lots of ripe cherry fruits and delicious yeasty flavors. This is a highly complex and tensioned but beautifully balanced 2002 with a charming dosage that gives perfect roundness. The finish however is clear fresh and well-structured if not taut and very mineral. Tasted in Reims in April 2018. Krug's Olivier Krug and I didn't get together during my first four years at The Wine Advocate?we were both traveling a lot and our paths didn't cross for years. They still didn't cross in April this year but thanks to president Magareth Henriquez I was welcomed by PR Manager Romain Cappelaere and the charming Julie Murez who guided me through the impressive cellars before she handed me over not to the expected cellar master Eric Lebel (who had to cancel at the last minute) but his young and jocular oenology department manager Julie Cavil with whom I tasted the cuvées. Julie has been with Krug since 2006 and is Lebel's righthand man. After the welcome aperitif in the family house (the 162nd edition of Krug's Grande Cuvée) I tasted in this order: 2002 Clos du Mesnil 2002 Clos d'Ambonnay 2002 and 2004 Vintage Brut and the 158th edition of the Grande Cuvée which is also based on the great 2002 vintage though it tries to overcome the vintage style. As readers know Krug's utterly generous golden-yellow colored Grande Cuvée a composition of 120 to 200+ base wines three grape varieties and 15 to 20+ vintages is the first prestige cuvée re-created each year yet without letting the vintage play the first fiddle. Without guidance I probably would have tasted the wines the other way around to end up with the very particular single-vintage single-vineyard single-variety "Anti-Krugs." Yet this is not the Krug philosophy. The Grande Cuvée is by far the most important wine of the house and the prestigious quintessence of the house style that is always more important than anything else perhaps more important than even vintage even single vineyard... The generous complex mature but fresh and certainly highly finessed and elegant Krug style is achieved by many steps for example: a wide range of vineyards in top locations; an early harvest; the individual vinification of each pressing; alcoholic (and malolactic) fermentation and aging until February in old small oak barrels; the reserve wine library with 150 individual wines from about 15 different vintages; the long lees aging of five to eight years... However starting the tasting with Krug's single-vineyard cuvées from the glorious 2002 vintage is not the worst entry into a tasting day. Krug's Grande Cuvée was released the first time in 1843 and starting with the 158th Edition it displays the edition number on the front label which helps to speak not just about a famous brand and great Champagne but also about a specific edition. That's why we have just started to give each edition its own entry in our database because it previously was impossible to know which edition the reviewer was talking about. More transparency is also given by the ID code a six-digit number located on the upper left hand side of the back label whose first three digits indicate the period of disgorgement (for example 108 means: first quarter 2008). On Krug's website consumers can now get insight into some technical data of each cuvée which had been a secret for so many years. The ID code can also be used as a reference to collect bottles and enjoy them whenever it seems to be appropriate. Published: Jun 29 2018
"Beautifully aromatic this leads with aromas of ground clove coffee liqueur and mandarin orange peel adding crystallized honey dried cherry acacia blossom and toasted brioche notes on the expansive palate. Rich in flavor and broad in structure with verve driving this through to the long satiny finish."
