The 2020 Savagnin Vigne Aux Dames was hitting it on all cylinders and today I preferred it to the 2020 Professeur. I believe it's even better than the 2019. It comes from vines planted in 1947 one hectare in total in Vigne Aux Dames one of the best lieux-dits in Château Chalon where François Rousset-Martin makes ouillé wines with a long élevage. This matured in 400-liter barrels for three and a half years. This is very elegant and delicate ethereal and vibrant fresh and salty. 3000 bottles were filled in early 2024. I previewed the 2022 from a new Alsatian oak foudre and it was showing very well; it made me salivate. by Luis Gutiérrez 08/24 François Rousset-Martin explained how 2022 was very warm and dry with difficulties during the fermentation. He loves 2021 a very difficult year with lots of problems and very small quantities but the wines are like the wines from the past lowish alcohol (11.5% to 12%) and higher acidity and he wants to do a longer élevage. In general he's trying to do longer élevage especially for the whites. Some cuvées he keeps for four years now. 2021 quantities were low so he blended all the Chardonnay (five hectoliters per hectare) into one wine. Yields were a little better for Savagnin (10-12 hectoliters per hectare) and the reds. The character of 2023 is somewhere between 2021 and 2022 warm and ripe but with less. In 2022 and 2023 he had good yields an average of 50 hectoliters per hectare. 2024 is going to be catastrophic again due to the frost and mildew (it rained every four days...). The wines showed superbly making him one of the finest producers in Jura. His production is between 50000 and 60000 bottles per year in the good years but in the years like 2021 he only produced 10000 bottles.
Matured for 42 months in 300- and 400-liter oak vessels the 2020 Savagnin Côtes du Jura Vigne Aux Dames is alluring. Precisely sculpted lemon peel yellow apple chamomile and a dash of dried blossom are front and center. Vibrant and tensile on the medium-bodied palate the 2020 is alive and kicking. Closing with persistence on the sapid finish it deserves a round of applause. - By Nicolas Greinacher on July 2024
