The colour is a very rich deep purple. The bouquet is classical Richebourg offering peonies compared to the roses of St Vivant. Gorgeously headily perfumed with a balanced weight of fruit. The attack immediately shows a sweetness of fruit a little touch of grenadine some blood orange for me this is well ahead of Romanée St-Vivant in 2018. Not just an extra layer of velvet but ever more detail on the palate. Absolutely dancing not sure if the king is allowed to disport himself thus.
The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru boasts one of the most expressive aromatics from barrel offering dark berries mixed with crushed limestone pressed flowers and oyster shell the fruit becoming more intense with aeration. The palate is extremely cohesive with unerring symmetry filigreed tannins (perhaps more like a Romanée-Saint-Vivant) and immense depth endowed upon
The whole bunch fermentation that is a hallmark of DRC's style is particularly apparent on this rich textured almost Baroque Richebourg. Exotic plush and spicy with intense white pepper and clove aromas fine-grained tannins scented new oak and layers of bramble raspberry and forest floor flavours Layered complex winemaking. (Drink between 2026 - 2038)
This too is very restrained though a bit of swirling quickly coaxes the ultra-spicy and very ripe nose to reveal liqueur-like aromas of black cherry raspberry and cassis that are trimmed in a beautiful array of spice elements. There is outstanding intensity to the concentrated big-bodied flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract that confers a sappy texture to the mid-palate while also enrobing the very firm tannic spine shaping the superbly complex powerful and massively long finish. This is a stunningly good young Richebourg with simply amazing potential that should amply repay long-term cellaring. (Drink starting 2045)
