There are two demi-muids of the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige Blanc (one being new) and it's mostly old vine Roussanne from the sandy portions of the La Janasse lieu-dit. Another thrilling white from this incredible team it has awesome aromatics of honeyed tangerines white flowers citrus oil and toasted spices with a kiss of chalky minerality. Rich and medium to full-bodied it?s concentrated yet vibrant as well.

More concentrated with a touch more wood influence than in the regular cuvée the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Prestige is mainly barrel-fermented Roussanne bolstered by smaller proportions of Clairette and Grenache. Scents of ripe pear peach and wood spice dominate the nose while the medium to full-bodied palate is honeyed and creamy lush and long. Cream sauces and rich fish dishes seem like natural pairings. Christophe Sabon comes across as very even-keeled with a philosophical outlook geared toward the vagaries of farming. In 2022 he explained "The places that didn't get hail benefited from the [August] rain." Volumes for some cuvées here were off by as much as one-third because of the hail following a year in which late frosts were widespread reducing production of some other cuvées. At my summer visit hopes were high that 2023 would at last provide some volume to work with. Christophe's children are working toward taking on the mantle of the estate in the near future with a daughter who has done vintages at Man O' War (in New Zealand) and Château Palmer and a son who was working at Miner Family (in Napa Valley). A powerful concentrated white that's as seductively lush as it is complex with crushed flint and smoke notes firming up a generous well of creamed pear jasmine and crushed apple on an oily palate that's densely packed and vibrating with mineral energy. Green tea?edged tannins add to the structure and hints of citrus zest vie with brioche through the persistent finish. Roussanne Grenache Blanc and Clairette. Drink now through 2030. 120 cases made 56 cases imported.
