Domaine de la Janasse is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer owned and operated by the Sabon family. It was founded in 1967 by Aimé Sabon when he took over the vineyards of his father who had been selling fruit to a wine cooperative. A cellar was completed in 1973 and the name ""La Janasse"" was chosen from a local regional name in Courthézon to the north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape where the family farm was located. In 1991 Aimé's son Christophe came aboard followed by his daughter Isabelle in 2001. Janasse grows all 13 permissible grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the standard Grenache Mourvedre and Syrah to lesser known components like Counoise Vaccarese and Bourboulenc. Many of the white Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties along with Syrah are planted in the slightly cooler vineyards to the north in east-exposed vineyards. Mourvèdre is planted with galets (river stones) that retain heat and allow the grapes to reach greater physiological ripeness. The most significant variety in the region is Grenache which is planted throughout the vineyards. However Janasse separates fruit from northern vineyards for use in varietal wines and fruit in southern vineyards for blends where its character is balanced by other grapes."
This is packed with plum raspberry and blackberry confiture flavors that are youthfully wound up while warm stone anise bay leaf garrigue and tar notes fill in throughout. Dense but juicy with a long smoldering feel on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2040
Time will tell if this wine equals the stellar 2015; it's certainly very close in quality. The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a blend of approximately 75% Grenache 12% Mourvèdre 8% Syrah and the rest other permitted varieties. Tarry and deep on the nose it delivers waves of blackberries and black cherries on the palate framing those flavors with plenty of richness layers of silky tannins and a long elegant finish. -Joe Czerwinski
Incorporating 8% Mourvèdre, 12% Syrah and 5% other permitted variety, 60% destemmed, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes sports a deep, inky color as well as sensational notes of black currants, smoked meats, earth and crushed rocks. Deep, rich, unctuous and decadent, with huge extract and richness, yet never over the top or overripe, it's a killer wine that's going to flirt with perfection on release.
