This sports dark cherry currant and raspberry fruit flavors that are mulled in feel but kept taut and lively by a torrent of acidity while sage warm earth white pepper savory and flint notes bounce around. Overall a bit sauvage in feel this is a compelling wine but needs cellaring to tame it and allow it to stretch out. Best from 2026 through 2038. From California.?J.M.

The 2022 Pinot Noir La Côte opens with a composed harmonious nose that only hints at the concentration and weightless density found within combining bright high-toned fruit aromas with profound grounded savory flourishes. The palate is striking in its layered nearly opulent power which admirably manages impressive richness without losing focus drive or allure. The finish is similarly multidimensional and expansive wrapping up the wine with bright acidity and precise fine-grained powdery tannins. This wine never stopped morphing and expanding in the glass both in aromatic fidelity and in the dimension of the finish suggesting this has plenty of potential in the cellar. Unquestionably one of the premier Pinot Noir-focused wineries in the United States this partnership between Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr has made significant strides to push quality and transparency even further. Shorter élevages of 10?11 months in higher proportions of new Ermitage barrels have added freshness and polish melding exceptionally well with their all-in stance on whole-cluster fermentations. The only sulfur additions occur at bottling and the 2023 vintage saw the complete elimination of press wine. Their 40 acres of tightly spaced heritage clone Pinot Noir plantings yield a punishing average of two tons per acre?at densities of 4000?7000 vines per acre?instilling the wines with a captivating concentration while remaining strikingly ethereal. The 2022 Pinot Noir La Côte is the most intensely savory and mineral of the Pinots here. In that sense it offers an extremely vivid expression of the rugged windswept nature of this site on the far western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills. Crushed rocks dried herbs lavender cedar sweet pipe tobacco and red cherry fruit abound. In 2022 the dry warm year balanced stem inclusion and the natural savoriness of this very cool site on the far western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. ?We tend to ripen on the early side probably because our yields are so low? Moorman elaborated. ?We brought everything in before the severe heat but where the heat was more evident was in the cellar. We use only ambient ferments so fermentations were warmer than usual. As a result the 2022s have a bit more extraction than our norm.? Beginning in 2022 the Pinots see more new oak than in the past. The goal of this decision is two-fold: firstly to add structure in compensation for the recent exclusion of press lots and secondly to ensure a hygienic environment for the wines as the domaine does not use SO2 in pre-fermentation or aging.
