The 2022 Maranges Clos Rousseau 1er Cru is the first release after the family's tiny parcel has been supplemented by a fermage to make half a hectare vinified without SO2 until the end of élevage and 100% whole bunches. The tightly wound black fruited bouquet unfolds in the glass with white pepper and a touch of bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins quite compact at the moment with a grippy finish suggesting that it will require 3-4 years in bottle. (Drink between 2026-2037)
A markedly more floral and slightly higher-toned nose offers up an array of various dark berries plum and discreet warm earth wisps. The suave round and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess good richness that contrasts with the powerful dusty firm rustic and youthfully austere finale. (Drink starting 2032)
The domaine always owned a small plot but now have taken back some more to make nearly half a hectare so there is enough for a cuvée this year. It has been made in a different way too: all whole bunch vinification and no sulphur until racking. A fine dark purple in colour. The bouquet has an exceptional energy the vibrant dark berry fruit completely filling the palate. Spice and white pepper at the back giving a drier note to the otherwise sweet fruit then a whole cherry perfume right at the finish. Entrancing. Slightly riper fruit here 13.7% at harvest.
