Gorgeous and inviting, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is loaded with inky dark fruit, leather, mocha and grilled herbs that all run through. Readers will find a super-classic, structured Cabernet with a ton of character and personality.

Tom Garrett turned out a gorgeous set of 2021s at his family’s estate in Oakville. In recent years, Garrett has emphasized a bit more freshness in his approach, and that’s a positive as the wines seem to have plenty of richness on their own. Things were more complicated in 2022 when the fruit had to be picked in the middle of the Labor Day heat spike. Right now, the 2022s are on the lighter side. It will be interesting to see how they develop. However, the real news here is that several of the best winemakers in Napa Valley are about to gain access to this fruit now that a lease held by another winery has expired. When that happens, quality often goes up for all involved because of friendly competition and shared learning.
vRich and nicely layered offering black currant and blackberry fruit that moves through slowly carried by loam singed alder and tobacco notes. A solid structure courses underneath with an echo of warm earth lingering amid the fruit. Best from 2025 through 2037. ?J.M.
