The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak. It has an exquisite bouquet amongst the finest I encountered within the appellation: brilliantly defined red and black fruit hints of sea spray and shucked oyster shell and a touch of violet. Entrancing. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture but not silky - there's a pleasing subtle granularity here. Hints of black truffle emerge towards the structured finish. This wonderful Charmes-Chambertin deserves several years in a cool dank cellar. (Drink between 2030-2065)
Bachelet's 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes is a beauty bursting with aromas of cherries red berries rose petals incense exotic spices and licorice. Full-bodied layered and velvety with a textural attack and an unctuous core of fruit that's framed by sweet supple tannins it's gourmand elegant and demonstrative concluding with a long expansive finish. I suspect it will have to take a close second place to its 2020 counterpart but it will hit its prime sooner. The 2022 vintage is another great success for Denis Bachelet and his son Nicolas distinguished by its purity and charm. And it marks at last a return to somewhat normal yields at this address. I've been tasting from barrel here for a decade and the approach hasn't changed: old vines destemmed berries and gentle extraction followed by élevage in barrels of which up to 30%?for the Charmes-Chambertin?are new and most of which derive from Tonnellerie Rémond. As I have reported in the past Bachelet has been punching down less since the 2014 vintage evolving in the direction of finesse and structural suppleness without sacrificing depth or incipient complexity. No denser in the colour than the others and the bouquet is not quite as earth shattering as some years. But still very fine. This is gorgeously sensual even so with the right balance of acidity and tannins to complete long fine juicy and delicious. 7 barrels made in 2022.
Much like the Evocelles the very pretty nose is quite cool and restrained with its broad-ranging panoply of aromas that include red cherry violet lavender and a hint of wood. There is excellent volume to the refined intense and gorgeously textured larger-scaled flavors that possess even better overall depth and persistence. As is usually the case this is a Charmes of finesse but with the underlying material and balance to age for years. (Drink starting 2034)
