Cain Vineyards and Winery is located in Spring Mountain and was created following the purchase in 1980 by Jerry and Joyce Cain of 550 acres that had formerly belonged to the McCormick Ranch. The initial plantings of vines resulted in a bottling from the 1982 vintage under the “Cain Cellars” label. Four vintages of Cain Five were produced from 1990 to 1994. Following the sale of the winery in 1991 to Jim and Nancy Meadlock, in response to challenges presented by phylloxera, a replanting program was established, the fruit from which was bottled first in the 2007 vintage. 90 acres are planted to vines but a portion of these and the winery itself were lost to the Glass Fire in 2020.
Cain Five is the bottling from the estate’s own vineyards – so named because it is a blend of the five classic Bordeaux varieties.
Good ruby-red color. Reduced aromas of roasted nuts smoke and tobacco along with a ripe tomato note. Supple and pliant in the mouth with very good but not outstanding density and concentration. Notes of currant leather and tar. Finishes with nicely managed tannins. In a rather easygoing style and likely to provide early pleasure.
