Ripe aromas of plum violet and earth precede solidly voluminous rich and intense larger-scaled flavors that flash evident power and minerality on the balanced very firm and beautifully persistent finish. This is already impressively harmonious and a wine that should reward up to 20 years of cellaring yet drink
One of the high points of the range is the 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Hauts a medium to full-bodied round and fleshy wine evocative of raspberries plums sweet spices and orange rind. It's a soft charming rendition of this site which delivers a more linear ethereal style than the stereotypical muscularity of Rugiens-Bas.
The 2019 Pommard Les Rugiens-Haut 1er Cru has a nicely focused bouquet although I would have liked a little more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip and quite mineral-driven offering blackberry and raspberry and a pleasant chalkiness toward the finish. A somewhat playful Pommard. (Drink between 2022-2037)
Slightly darker colour and a little bit sombre on the nose. While the fruit falls short of being raisiny this is one of the wines where I find that the heat has got to the grapes. This shows also in the slightly drier finish. There is no shortage of concentrated fruit here but I prefer a fresher style of pinot.
