The nose is beachside flora as wild fruit and herbs grow between the cracks of rocks encrusted with salt. The palate leans into the metallic savory notes but cherries bubbly acid and a latent heat provide balance. ? Danielle Callegari
The Benanti 2021 Etna Rosso Contrada Cavaliere is punchy and bright with lots of primary fruit that recalls raspberry and redcurrant with a hint of white pepper. This vintage delivers a very clean and immediate quality of fruit that is crisp snappy and even crunchy in texture. The winemaking style is focused and very precise. It will be fun to see where this wine goes three to four years from now. Tasted today you definitely need more bottle age.
This 100% Nerello Mascalese from the Southwestern slope is rounder and more concentrated than Contrada Monte Serra. Fermented with indigenous Etna yeasts identified by Benanti after years of research and aged for one year in tonneaux the full-bodied palate features fleshy black cherry ground pepper nutmeg and a hint of salted game. Firm close-grained tannins provide the backbone. Drink 2025-2031. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O?Keefe October 2023 ©kerinokeefe.com
