Pouring a rich ruby color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino offers an attractive nose of cherry candies, sweet herbs, polished leather, and orange oils. It moves seamlessly to the palate with equally harmonious structure and a great, long finish. Medium to full-bodied, it lasts for ages. This is one of those wines that’s going to have a very wide drinking window and is exceptional already. Drink 2026-2046.
Altesino’s modern history begins with Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, who purchased the estate in 2001 and at the same time purchased the Caparzo estate in the north of Montalcino. Altesino’s holdings include 50 hectares, 26 of which are reserved for Brunello production. Of their seven vineyard sites, Montosoli was the first to carry a vineyard designation in Montalcino, with its first vintage in 1975. Today they have seven vineyard sites, four in the south of the region, reaching as far as Castelnuovo dell’Abate, and three in the north. In 2006, they built a fully sustainable winery and are currently producing zero CO2 emissions. Fermentations occur in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with selected yeast before being transferred to large Slavonian oak up to 120 hl in size. The winery has two full-time winemakers, Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci. Elisabetta’s children, Alessandra and Ignio (aerospace and environmental engineers, respectively) both tend the estate, with Alessandra returning in 2017.
The Altesino 2019 Brunello di Montalcino boasts a rich and savory side that this wine wears very well. There is a beautiful level of dark fruit that folds into the wine's velvety texture. Blackberry and plum envelop the palate adding elegant full-bodied volume and fine tannins along the way. The wine is aged in traditional Slavonian casks and production reaches 110000 bottles annually (which is very ambitious considering this level of quality). Altesino hits it out of the ballpark with its 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli. This wine stands out for its faithful representation of its environment. Mineral-rich sensations reflect the schistic galestro soils of this unique vineyard site. Published: Dec 14 2023
A dark ruby color in the glass the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a beguiling blend of dusty earth crushed rocks savory herbs and dried roses. This is racy and sleek with vividly ripe wild berry fruits elevated by orange and sage all guided by vibrant acidity. Grippy tannins take control through the finish yet the mouth is left watering for more as a bitter licorice tinge and dark chocolate adds a crunchy sensation. - By Eric Guido on November 2023 The 2019s from Altesino are some of the best new releases I can remember tasting at this address. The Brunello a blend of vineyards throughout the region is stunning with its depth complexity and energy combination. However in recent years Altesino has worked to secure more vineyards in the north except the Lavacchio vineyard a new acquisition in the extreme southwest. As for the single vineyard Montosoli a true northern wine it's easily one of the vintage's top Brunellos. Its radiance is off the charts and that helps push the terroir marker even higher. Both wines are refined for 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The 2019 reminded Alessandra Angelini of vintages of the 1990s like 1990 1996 and 1999.
