Decanter: 92 Points

This lithe supple wine boasts aromas of pomegranate and raspberry with nuance from notes of rose petals earth and spice. The texture shows elegant finesse rather than muscle but there is enough substance to bring everything into balance. Clerget farms .65 hectares in this prime mid-slope location next to Champans. The grapes are destemmed and fermented without punching down before ageing in cask (30% new). This accessible wine should age well for at least a decade. (Drink between 2025-2045)

There are only two barrels of the 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous La Chapelle a perfumed elegant wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of wild berries peonies and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied ample and fleshy with lively acids powdery tannins and a saline finish it was bottled by hand directly from the barrels. Last year I reported on Thibaud Clerget's stylistic evolution in the direction of suaver more elegant wines. That was already apparent with the 2020s which saw shorter cold soaks few punch-downs and less new oak; and the tendency is confirmed with a set of 2021s that achieve the impressive feat of equalling or even surpassing Clerget's earlier vintages in a year that was far more challenging in the vineyards. These sensual perfumed melting reds were produced in minute qualities with several cuvées so small that Thibaud opted to bottle several by hand directly from the barrel rather than to rack such small volumes to tank for mechanical bottling. That certainly seems to have worked well to preserve their delicacy and fragrance. While this estate's holdings hardly fit the theme of this article I'm publishing the notes here in the interest of timeliness since so few bottles were produced. Published: Oct 19 2023

Vinous: 92 Points

There were only two barrels of the 2021 Volnay En Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru that had just been bottled so there was some reduction when I tasted it at the Domaine. Despite this there seems to be sufficient red brambly fruit on the nose quite open and appealing. The palate is well-balanced and has fine substance with good grip and dark fruit on the finish. My hunch is that this will age better than many Volnays. (Drink between 2025-2040)

Jasper Morris: 91 Points

In bottle. Two barrels made both one year old. Usually Thibaud makes 12! He put more lees in this wine much less in others and this has led to a light reduction. Not sulphured before the bottling. A fresh crimson colour. The fruit on the palate still shows the light reductive character but otherwise a superb deep raspberry fruit. Good acidity with perfect energy to finish by which time the wine h

Burghound: 90 Points

Here the nose is reduced just enough to mask the fruit though a touch of wood does peek through. The palate impression of the medium weight flavors isn't quite as rich but there is both better vibrancy and refinement and particularly so on the stony delicate and youthfully austere finale. If this can add more depth my rating may be a bit too conservative. (Drink starting 2028)
