Wonderfully Young Drink Now Barolo The wines of Roccheviberti come from two of the greatest vineyards in Barolo’s Castiglione Falletto commune: Bricco Boschis and Rocche di Castiglione. Vineyards that are widely recognized, famed and loved around the world. However, the family estate known as Roccheviberti is not a name that many will recognize. Production is small and the production from these historic vineyards is overshadowed by the larger producers associated with them. For most people, Bricco Boschis is a monopole - solely produced by Cavallotto. Rocche di Castiglione is most associated with Vietti, Brovia, and Roagna. Yet in both vineyards, Claudio Viberti is producing some exceptional traditional Barolo that are graceful and alluring. These parcels have been in Claudio’s family for three generations, beginning in 1946. Claudio’s father and grandfather are both revered farmers in Castiglione Falletto. They tended the vineyards and sold their grapes to some of the finest producers of the region. However, Claudio wanted to commercially produce wine from the family parcels and therefore began to estate bottle Roccheviberti in 2003. Farming at Roccheviberti is all done by hand and is organic. The vine age in Bricco Boschis averages 35 years while the Rocche di Castiglione is 50 years. While the wines are very traditional in style and for the most part are very traditionally made, the small advances in technology employed by Claudio yield wines that are extremely well defined and graceful for these two historic structured and dark personalities of Nebbiolo. This approach works extremely well with a vintage like 2018. A generous and round vintage, the 2018s are full of explosive aromatics, soft tannins and inviting fruit that makes these wines accessible and enjoyable today. Cheers, |
