98pt Cheval des Andes

In the wine world, it takes decades and decades for vineyards to come into their own and for properties to become the benchmark of their region. In what is basically an overnight sensation, Chateau Cheval Blanc’s foray into Argentina has become one of the world’s greatest expressions of Cabernet and Malbec. Cheval des Andes has become the benchmark for Bordeaux-style wines of Argentina.

Perched along the slopes of the Andes in Mendoza, Cheval des Andes’s high elevation vineyards harness the power and energy of the region's famed Malbec that is softened and rounded with Cabernet Sauvignon. While it is normally the Cabernet in a Bordeaux blend that needs the taming, here Cabernet is the key to bringing about a balance and refinement at Cheval des Andes. It is the art of the blend that allows the beautiful richness and opulence of the Malbec to come forward, shedding the green edges and bitter overtones for supple textures and florality that evoke the best of St. Emilion and Pomerol.

Cheval des Andes is a wine that continues to improve and has hit a stride of great, solid wines vintage after vintage. These are consistently some of the finest wines of the region and wines that rival even their older Bordeaux siblings. When it comes to Cheval, you can’t go wrong with Cheval Blanc or Cheval des Andes - they are simply iconic benchmarks that never cease to excel.

Cheers,
Jeremy
