Domaine Chave Hermitage is without a doubt one of the greatest wines in the world, yet the savvy Rhone-lover knows that the Saint-Joseph and Hermitage Farconnet are the best kept secrets in the wine world.
A family dynasty that traces their winemaking roots back to 1481, the name Chave has long been known for Hermitage and was propelled to international fame by Robert Parker's reporting on the region in the 1990s.
The dynasty originated in Mauves-Saint-Joseph, where Jean-Louis Chave is now revitalizing some magnificent vineyards. The Domaine Chave Saint-Joseph is once again a benchmark of the region, and the ideal example of age-worthy Saint-Joseph.
Along with the hard restoration work on the vineyards in Saint-Joseph, Jean-Louis has worked to bring a collection of vineyards and wines at affordable prices to Rhone lovers under the JL Chave Selections. Originally started as a negociant, the JL Chave Selections has evolved over the years to focus on long-term leased vineyards that are farmed to Jean-Louis’s specifications, as well as incorporating a portion of young vines from the estate vineyards. The 2015 Hermitage Farconnet is purely estate vineyards, and without a doubt the finest vintage of Farconnet to date.
These are some of the most soulful expressions of Syrah in the Rhone today, from one of the greatest vignerons of all-time.
Cheers,
