Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the great wine making traditions and innovations of both families, the founders singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley.
Aromas of rose petals, cassis and black cherry in the 2008 combine with notes of marzipan and sandalwood. A satin texture complements the wines smooth, round tannins, its bright acidity supporting a juicy and elegant mouthfeel. This precocious and remarkable wine offers a long finish, with traces of clove and dark chocolate.

"Dark red-ruby. Black raspberry and bitter chocolate on the inviting nose. Quite suave on entry, then wild and a bit gamey in the middle palate, with noteworthy energy to the black raspberry and chocolate flavors. Plenty of acidity here, but it's well buffered by the wine's material. In a rather penetrating style, but broadens out impressively on the back end, finishing with chocolatey tannins and superb subtle persistence."
"Next to the 2007, the 2008 Opus One comes across as dark, powerful and brooding. Tar, savory herbs, licorice, blackberry jam and grilled herbs are some of the many notes that explode from the glass in a masculine, virile Opus One that stands out for its sheer personality. The 2008 reminds me a little of the 2005, but it has even more polish and sweetness, especially in the tannin."
