Cellar/Tasting Notes
In the second half of the 1980s, the Alvarez family had the idea to create a new winery in the Ribera del Duero, one which would present a more modern expression of the region using 100% Tinto Fino and 100% French oak. With this idea in mind, Bodegas y Vinedos Alion was created in 1991. Since that first vintage, which was named to the Wine Spectator's Top 100, Alion has been a commercial and critical success. It is also a perfect foil for its parent winery. Where the wines of Vega Sicilia display classical elegance and reserve, Alion is a sleeker, racier breed. It No fruit from vines under ten years of age is used in any of the wines in the Vega Sicilia family. Stephen Tanzer (ST): 92 "Deep ruby. Expressive aromas of candied cherry and cassis, with complicating notes of cola, anise and violet. Plush and seamless on the palate, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and slow-building oak spice and licorice nuances. Closes on a smoky note, with spiciness and very good persistence. Pretty impressive for the year." |
