Venus La Universal is the winery of married couple Sara Perez (daughter of Clos Martinet's Jose Luis Perez) and Rene Barbier Jr. (son of Clos Mogador's Rene Barbier). Though their roots are in Priorat, they ventured to Monsant and are slowly making a name for themselves.
Having taken the goddess Venus as their inspiration, their goal is to exhibit femininity through a bottle of wine and their goal is justified as their wines are elegant, refined,
sensual expressions of the Montsant terroir.
The 2011 Dido is the winery's a tribute to youth, tenacity, love and Grenache. The wine, from the plots of Falset exhibits a delicious fruit and exhibits an extraordinary freshness and purity.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (RP): 93
"The red 2011 Dido is produced with organic farmed grapes grown on granitic soils and blends Garnacha, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The aim here is to keep the freshness. Forty percent of the wine is aged in concrete vats, while the rest is matured in clay amphorae and used oak. The result is a restrained, soil-driven red with earthy notes, black fruit, licorice and subtle Mediterranean herbs with some floral overtones and no traces of oak. The palate is medium-bodied, with clean, penetrating flavors, lively acidity and a long finish. A delicious, serious red showing balance and personality. What more can you ask for?"
Wine Spectator (WS): 90
