The estate was created at Bolgheri in 1983 as a result of Eugenio Campolmi’s desire to get closer to nature and establish an intimate relationship with his vines.
His idea was to start off from the vineyards, investing heavily in research and experimentation (including the use of varieties rarely planted in the area) and thus demonstrating that even a small estate can contribute towards making a wine region important. He and his wife, Cinzi Merli's, fruitful efforts paid off and now Le Macchiole is a highly acclaimed and respected vineyard.
Cinzi Merli, who now runs the vineyard (since her husband's passing in 2002), describes the Messorio as: "the perfect child: the one who works hard and who you can always be proud of. It is the wine that offers the utmost expression of the character of our terroir, and which displays structure, elegance and seductive perfumes. It is the iconic expression of our DNA. "
The Messorio is deep ruby red in color and the aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and tea are abundant. The wine is well balanced in spices and red fruits and is very persistent exhibiting mild tannins and luscious finish. This is an intense and rich wine for long ageing.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (RP): 95
"The 2000 Messorio shows off wonderful inner perfume in its ripe, dark cherries, grilled herbs, leather, licorice and espresso. The 2000 is just a touch more forward in its aromas and flavors than in its tannins, as it remains powerful, intense and tightly coiled. It is a big, fruit-driven wine in the style of the 1997, but with perhaps a touch more polish. The 2000 needs another two to three years before it enters the early part of its drinking window."
