The estate was created at Bolgheri in 1983 as a result of Eugenio Campolmi’s desire to get closer to nature and establish an intimate relationship with his vines.
His idea was to start off from the vineyards, investing heavily in research and experimentation (including the use of varieties rarely planted in the area) and thus demonstrating that even a small estate can contribute towards making a wine region important. He and his wife, Cinzi Merli's, fruitful efforts paid off and now Le Macchiole is a highly acclaimed and respected vineyard.
Cinzi Merli, who now runs the vineyard (since her husband's passing in 2002), describes the Scrio as: " The Prodigal son, the one that always causes worry and concern, the one who makes you work hard. With him you must always be attentive, you can never relax control, but then he can also give great satisfaction.
This is the wine that most reminds me of Eugenio. "
The Scrio presents with a deep and crisp ruby red color and has very persistent balsamic notes. It is round on the palate and its acidity gently melts with sweet tannins while exhibiting hints of mint and eucalyptus.

"The 2003 Scrio (100% Syrah) is another terrific effort from Le Macchiole. Packed with clove, cinnamon, sweet dark fruit, toasted oak and mint notes it is opulent and concentrated yet light on its feet, boasting extraordinary length and an eternal finish defined by a lingering note of sweetness. It too has improved considerably over the last few months and there is plenty of fruit to balance the tannins of the vintage. Simply put, it is a knock-out effort from this very challenging harvest."
