The estate was created at Bolgheri in 1983 as a result of Eugenio Campolmi’s desire to get closer to nature and establish an intimate relationship with his vines. His idea was to start off from the vineyards, investing heavily in research and experimentation (including the use of varieties rarely planted in the area) and thus demonstrating that even a small estate can contribute towards making a wine region important. He and his wife, Cinzi Merli's, fruitful efforts paid off and now Le Macchiole is a highly acclaimed and respected vineyard.
Cinzi Merli, who now runs the vineyard (since her husband's passing in 2002), describes the Paleo as: " the wine that I feel closest to, and which gives me the strongest sensations. It can surprise you in the nicest of ways and is the one which gives you great and unexpected emotions. It enters into
your soul in a persuasive, intriguing manner, without ever being excessive in any way"
The Paleo is produced from Cabernet Franc and Le Macchiole was the first in Bolgheri to believe in and appreciate the grape varietal.

"Paleo (a pure expression of Cabernet Franc from Coastal Tuscany) is a drop dead gorgeous wine with amazing intensity and purity of aromas. You get it all here: Bright berry notes, drying mineral, exotic spice, cooling acidity and firm, satisfying structure. It’s a rich, velvety and beautiful wine that will award you a memorable drinking experience now or in 10 years time."

"The 2007 Paleo Rosso (Cabernet Franc) offers up compelling, nuanced layers of smoke, dark cherries, mocha and grilled herbs in a style that reveals considerable richness and opulence but also quite a bit of verve, minerality and sheer structure. The wine has begun to shut down considerably since it was bottled and will require quite a bit of patience. Still, it is impossible to miss the silkiness of the tannins, the impeccable purity of the finish and the wine's exceptional overall sense of harmony. This brilliant effort will be a joy to follow over the coming years."
