Wine Enthusiast (WE): 90-92 "Barrel sample. There is wood here, the fruit is fresh, with a lively acidity on top of the core of tannin. A bright, fresh, blackcurrant wine" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (RP): 90 "The 2009 La Serre is a sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from this property, which sits on pure limestone soils. Amazingly supple and silky, this blend of 90% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc displays a big, almost Southern Rhone-like nose of kirsch liqueur, licorice and tobacco leaf, while some powdered minerals clearly evoke the limestone terroir to its advantage. Medium to full-bodied, plump and opulent, this is a wine to drink in its first decade of life, although I suspect it will last longer. " Stephen Tanzer (ST): 89-91 "Good deep ruby. Very deep aromas of black cherry, smoky plum and peppery grilled meat. Dense and sappy in the mouth, with flavors of crushed fruits complicated by cassis, coffee and a saline character. Not overly sweet but deeper and more refined than usual; previously I had found this wine to be an enjoyable but chunky mouthful. Finishes with seductive tannins and a breezy mouth feel. Probably the best La Serre yet. " Wine Spectator (WS): 92 "Pretty notes of rose and vanilla accent ripe, pure flavors of black cherry, raspberry and currant in this polished red. Bright acidity carries the smooth texture, with well-integrated tannins giving this balance. Drink now through 2020. " |
