The wine grape of the Northern Rhone of Cote Rotie and Hermitage. Known as Shiraz in Australia, it is spicy and intense, combining berry flavors with a light peppery aftertaste. Excellent Syrah also made in California and Washington State. When combined with Grenache and Mourvedre, also typical Rhone grapes, the results are fruity and characterful and delicious when drunk young. Charcoal-grilled steaks and spicy meats pair beautifully with Syrah.
